Subject:
Mandatory Training for Working With Children Checks
To Minister for Children, Lizzie Blandthorn, Minister for Government Services, Gabrielle Williams, Minister for Education, Ben Carroll and Attorney-General Jaclyn Symes. After reading about Australian Childhood Foundation’s campaign, I urge you to include mandatory online training about child sexual abuse, together with other forms of abuse and violation, as an additional requirement in the application process for all adults seeking a Working With Children Check. It is essential that such mandatory training be implemented by all government instrumentalities and professional bodies that are responsible for the professional registration of practice disciplines who work with children and young people (e.g. Victorian Institute of Teaching). It is critical that we listen to the voices of those with lived experiences of child sexual abuse, and this is what the Our Collective Experience Project, built on the insights of survivors, is asking for. With 3 in 10 Australians having experienced sexual abuse as a child, and the 1 in 10 Australian men who have admitted to sexually abusing a child being three times more likely to work with them, it is time for the Government to act boldly. I would like to know what your response to these calls are, and I hope it will be the right one: to listen to survivors and prevent child sexual abuse. Thank you.
